Thunderstorms, Hailstorms, and Heat Waves Expected in Many Parts of India Till May 5

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh nationwide weather alert predicting thunderstorms, gusty winds, hailstorms, and intense heatwave conditions across various parts of India until 5th May 2025.

Rainfall and Thunderstorm Activity in East and Central India

Several states in East and Central India including Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Vidarbha are expected to experience scattered to fairly widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds ranging between 40–60 kmph.

Some places may witness thunder squalls reaching speeds of up to 70 kmph, and isolated hailstorms are likely in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh. Heavy rainfall has already been reported in Odisha, where locations like Mohakalapada and Talcher recorded rainfall of up to 10 cm. These conditions are expected to continue until 4th May 2025.

Western Disturbance to Bring Storms to Northwest India

A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan starting from 1st May. Light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and dust storms are expected in these regions.

Dust storms are also likely over East Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and parts of Rajasthan between 30th April and 4th May.

Heatwave Conditions Continue in Western and Northwestern India

While some parts of the country prepare for rain and storms, others remain under intense heat. Severe heatwave conditions have been reported in Saurashtra & Kutch, southwest Rajasthan, and the Jammu division. Maximum temperatures in places like Barmer and Jaisalmer have touched 46°C, making it one of the hottest spells this season.

Southern India to Witness Rain and Hot, Humid Weather

In Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds up to 50 kmph are likely to occur over the next few days. At the same time, hot and humid conditions are expected to prevail in these areas.
