Above-Normal Monsoon Expected in 2025 – Positive News for Indian Farmers

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its latest weather forecast for the Southwest Monsoon 2025, bringing positive news for farmers across India. As per the IMD’s long-range forecast, the country is likely to receive 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA) rainfall between June and September 2025. This indicates an above-normal monsoon, which is highly beneficial for Indian agriculture.

Rainfall Prediction for Different Regions

  • Central India (Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra) and South Peninsular India (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu) are expected to receive above-normal monsoon rainfall.
  • Northwest India (Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan) is likely to experience normal rainfall.
  • Northeast India (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya) may see below-normal rainfall, and farmers in this region are advised to plan accordingly.

The Monsoon Core Zone, which includes major rain-fed agricultural areas, is also expected to receive above-normal rainfall. This is good news for farmers growing paddy, pulses, maize, and other kharif crops without irrigation.

June 2025 Rainfall and Temperature Outlook

According to the IMD weather update:

  • Above-normal rainfall is likely across most parts of the country.
  • Some parts of South India, Northwest, and Northeast India may experience below-normal rainfall.
  • Maximum temperatures are expected to remain normal to below normal across much of India, while minimum temperatures will be above normal in most regions.
  • Northwest and Northeast India may face slightly higher daytime temperatures.

Heatwave Conditions

The IMD forecast predicts fewer heatwave days in June 2025, especially in Northwest, Central, and East India.

Climate Conditions Support Good Monsoon

The El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions are currently neutral, which supports a stable and favourable monsoon season.

Preparing for Monsoon: Farmer Tips

  • Prepare for timely sowing as monsoon rainfall may begin early and remain strong.
  • Ensure proper drainage systems in fields to prevent waterlogging during heavy rains.
  • In regions expecting less rainfall, like Northeast India, arrange supplementary irrigation.
