In a landmark step towards digitally empowering Indian farmers, Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan registered for his Farmer ID on Monday at his farmhouse in Vidisha. The move is part of the Government of India’s ongoing Digital Agriculture Mission, which aims to make farming more transparent, efficient, and inclusive.
“Farmer ID will provide farmers with access to all government schemes in a transparent and hassle-free manner,” said Chouhan.
What is Farmer ID?
The Farmer ID is a unique digital identity that stores a wide range of information related to a farmer and their agricultural activities, including:
- Land records and crop information
- Soil health and nutrient details
- Livestock data
- Personal and family details
- Access to government schemes
- Any other relevant farming-related data
All this information will be available in one centralized identity. This will significantly reduce the paperwork required to avail benefits from schemes such as bank loans, PM Fasal Bima Yojana, and PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi. Farmers will be able to access these benefits without hassles or repeated documentation.
Additionally, the Farmer ID will help reduce land record discrepancies and make it easier for farmers to obtain advisory services or technical support by simply presenting their ID.
So far, 5.5 crore Farmer IDs have been generated across India, including 78 lakh in Madhya Pradesh alone. The minister urged all farmers to create their Farmer ID to access government schemes and services in one place.
How is it part of the Digital Agriculture Mission?
Launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Digital Agriculture Mission includes the development of Agri Stack—a digital infrastructure that combines farmer databases, land records, and input-output tracking.
The Farmer ID is a key component of this system, forming the foundation for smarter, data-driven agriculture in India.
